Phoebe Winterbottom is convinced that her mother has been kidnapped.  A lunatic has been stalking her house, and secret messages have appeared at her doorstep.  She tries to solve this mystery, while keeping her mother’s disappearance a secret from all her classmates except for Sal.

Salamanca Tree Hiddle, otherwise known as Sal, is traveling across the country with one goal in mind: reach Lewiston, Idaho in time for her missing mother’s birthday, and hopefully bring her back.  During this trip, she recalls the story of Phoebe and the lunatic to her eccentric grandparents.
